MAY 2018

What's up Windy City!

As we start to turn the corner here and prepare for summer in Chicago, it's a good time to reflect on an amazing Spring. Last month we hosted a Mindfulness Workshop (Thank you Julia Sarazine!); as well, an Olympic Weightlifting Seminar (Thank you Will Rawlings!). In addition, long-time member Gwen Holtan competed in the CrossFit Games 50-54 Masters Women online qualifier. And... Murph TEAM is at it again, preparing for June 2nd...32 strong! Lastly... we had some BIG wins in the gym this past month...Michelle Markelz' 1st Muscle-Up, Annie's first strict chin-up, and many others. Looking forward, we're really excited about our 11th Annual Murph event coming up on June 2nd. Sign-up is live. Don't miss this one; more details below. And you may have noticed the new Windy City Challenges board in the atrium. We're working on putting together an event around these challenges for later in the summer. More info coming soon... To finish up, as always we have another fantastic AOM that we're profiling this month. Check it out below!

Keep livin' BIG,

—Justin

  • Windy City Challenges
Do you have what it takes to get your name on our Windy City Challenge boards? Set your sights on a challenge, then pull a coach aside to get an official record. Only coaches can grace your name on the Windy City Challenge Boards (i.e. please don't add your own name). Good luck! Learn more

  • Super G—86th in the world!
Congratulations to long-time Windy City member Gwen Holtan. Gwen, once again, qualified to move on to the next stage of the CrossFit Masters Women (50-54) competition, and ended up finishing 86th in the world!  Congrats again Super G!

  • Please sign in at the kiosk before/after your workouts
We’ll be honest, we've been pretty lax about checking you in before your workout. But we need to make this mandatory so we can keep tabs on how full classes are in order for you to get the best experience at the gym. So starting today, please make checking in at the kiosk part of your workout routine. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

STAFF FAVE FOUR

Here's a list of what we're loving and learning this month:

  1. Eloise: Book I'm reading
"Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable" by Tim S. Grover—Rereading. Who wouldn't want to learn from the guy who trained Michael Jordan?

  2. Annie: Habit I'm trying
Selfcare Sunday—If I don't take care of myself, I can't take care of others and that are my favorite. Have to take my own medicine.

  3. John: App I'm into
Chipotle—If you're a 1-trick pony like me and always get the same thing, you'll appreciate the one click ordering feature. Boom! Grab n go.

  4. Justin: Gear I'm using
GR1—I take this bag everywhere! Lifetime warrantee—best bag I've ever owned.

The Science Behind Falling Out of Shape

Or why you should never, ever stop training

When you’re in peak physical condition, you feel like a superhero—like you could go forever, outpace a cheetah, or lift a VW Bug. But your superpowers are ephemeral; the second you stop training, they start to fade. We asked sports physiologist Iñigo Mujika to give us a quick rundown of what’s behind the glory and the fall. The takeaway: you should never, ever stop training for more than two weeks if you can help it. Here’s why.
