JULY 2018

What's up Windy City!

Summertime in the city is finally here! And you know what that means, right? Time to get out there and use that health and fitness! And Windy City members are doing just that. Helen Richmond and Rene Fiel have been all over the west — from Moab to Crested Butte and parts in between. Nick and Kat are livin’ BIG in Africa; Mel Poz summited Mt. Elbert; and some Windy City Spartans just tackled a Spartan Sprint. So cool to see! If you’re out there doing your thing, don’t forget to tag #windycitylivin. Your post will show up in the Windy City Pulse, where we share the latest from the Windy City community. A quick look back, and we couldn’t be more proud of our crew for another successful Murph event. We raised just over $7,000 this year for the Navy SEAL Foundation…and we’ll be making our donation by the end of the week. A BIG Thank You to all who participated, donated, supported. Looking ahead… man, we’re really excited about this month’s AOM. Hint #1 — she’s a rock star. Hint #2 — she has an even better rock star accent. Be sure to read her story. All that and more below. Check it out!

Keep livin' BIG,

—Justin

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Please sign in at the kiosk before/after your workouts
We’ll be honest, we've been pretty lax about checking you in before your workout. But we need to make this mandatory so we can keep tabs on how full classes are in order for you to get the best experience at the gym. So starting today, please make checking in at the kiosk part of your workout routine. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

  • Windy City Field Day: Save the Date – Sept. 8th
Get ready to throw down on Windy City's Field Day—a day to test your abilities and get your name on the Windy City Challenge boards (if you've got what it takes)! Stay tuned for more details. Read more about the Windy City Challenges here.

  • Heartland Games 2018
A BIG congratulations to Windy City members Taylor Perry, Alex Chudler, Nick Mirabile, Kat Widup, Lindsey Herndon and Kaley Cline for their participation in June’s Heartland Games. Lindsey and Kaley took 3rd overall! Congrats again to all.

  • July 4th Holiday Hours
Windy City Strength & Conditioning will be closed on July 4th in observance of the national holiday. We’ll be back better than ever on the 5th. We hope all of you get out there and enjoy the holiday with family and friends. ‘Merica!

  • New Team Member
We’re excited to welcome long-time member Taffi Schurz to the Windy City team. Taffi will be serving as a special advisor here at Windy City SC, tasked with reshaping our internal operations. Taffi currently serves as Vice President at KLDiscovery where she has helped grow the company from 15 full-time employees to over 1500 full-time, 1500 part-time staff, and over $280 million in revenue. If you see her in the gym, please welcome Taffi to our crew.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Lindy Moore

“I’ve learned in life that the path to self discovery and ultimately happiness is to authentically seek YOUR truth by being open to, and lean in to, vulnerability. To have experiences that make you feel uncomfortable or are fearful of. Whether its in your training, emotions, relationships or work. That’s where the growth happens and the magic begins. I believe that then, you can truly serve others wholeheartedly. It’s not easy and I don’t think it’s meant to be. It takes constant work. But you know deep down, in the face of adversity that whatever you are going through, you will learn and it will propel you forward. Your trajectory is going to go up.”

STAFF FAVE FOUR

Here's a list of what we're loving and learning this month:

  1. Justin: Thing I'm loving
Hello Fresh—Organic ingredients delivered weekly with instructions on how to make the meals—so good, an honestly, a lot of fun to cook.

  2. John: Habit I'm trying
Drink more tea and less coffee. I think my need for caffeine is more mental, and less physical. Tea is generally more mellow, and I want to keep my pearly whites.

  3. Molloy: App I'm into
GoPro—So easy to film basketball games with the go pro and with the app it allows you to make sure the camera is set up the correct position as well as start and stop the camera without being next to the camera

  4. Eloise: What I'm eating
    Bananas—bc, (K): Atomic number: 19; Electron configuration: [Ar] 4s1; Atomic mass: 39.0983 u ± 0.0001 u; Molar mass: 39.0983 g/mol; Discovered: 1807

ARTICLE OF THE MONTH

Up to the challenge

Chicago firefighter Corey Katsibubas accepted Windy City Strength & Conditioning’s Kickstart Challenge, and it changed his life

Two years ago, at 27, Corey Katsibubas was at his heaviest weight ever, ballooning to 270 pounds. A Chicago firefighter and co-owner of a South Side pizza joint with his father, he was admittedly lazy at the time. To the point where he failed to even realize he wasn’t taking care of himself. Eating poorly, going out after work all the time, blind to how it got away from him. But then reality hit. He knew he needed to do something.
